Supernova: The Breakthrough of a YouTube Star
Charis Ow debuts her first single with K-pop inspired music video
Whether it be a YouTube sketch, television programme, or even plastered on a bus in downtown KL, it’s likely that you’ve seen Charis Ow before. She entered the Malaysian entertainment scene in 2014, and has been growing her audience ever since. Most recently the starlet has embarked on her next creative expedition – her first single and music video.
“Supernova,” penned and performed in Bahasa Malaysia tells the story of a shy, and sweet girl who’s crushing hard on a cute boy. The music video follows Charis on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, creatively illustrating the universal feelings associated with feeling too shy to talk to the person you’re interested in. In this scenario, it turns out that both parties share feelings, resulting in the all-consuming thrill of their affections converging.
The music video purposefully contrasts reality with our imagination. The soft and delicate tones of some scenes representing our more muted public persona, while the neon-lit dance room reflects the braver character we harbour in our minds. In addition to demonstrating the vast array of Charis’ talents, this switching between scenes pays homage to the K-pop videos that the performer looked to as inspiration for this video.
“It’s been a dream of mine to launch my first single. I’ve known for a while that I wanted the first song I released to be in Bahasa Malaysia as a dedication and special shoutout to my chayangs for supporting my career so far,” the singer shared. “They have been with me every step of the way and I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them.”
Charis began her career in the industry with her YouTube channel “charisowTV.” This channel has been home to the multi talented artist’s projects like K-pop dance covers, beauty tutorial videos, as well as innovative challenges like the “Hijab Challenge” that garnered over half a million views. Over the years, her love of travel and talent for hosting opened doors to opportunities on nationally broadcasted television. Most notably, Charis snagged the coveted role of Head Mouseketeer on Disney Channel Asia’s Club Mickey Mouse.
“Supernova” is a timely celebration of everything Charis has achieved as an artist and performer. The single has allowed her to immerse herself in the discipline of music production as well as showcase her acting chops with the development of the music video.
