1. What attracted you to take up the drama Stove League?

어떤 점에 이끌려 <스토브리그> 출연을 결심하셨나요?

I’ve participated in various genres of dramas. By rough criteria I can say costume dramas and modern dramas, but In detail, I experienced genres such as drama, romance, action, comedy, fantasy, etc. The most recent title was about ‘Crime, Suspense, Thriller’. I needed a rest both mentally and physically after experiencing a combination of different genres. Until I decided to be on this drama, I spent time emptying my mind, relaxing, with an expectation for the new title. I was looking for something with which I can finish up this year worthwhile and met <Hot Stove League>. The fact that its genre was ‘Sports Drama’ felt so fresh and good. I felt very comfortable. The main material might be a baseball world, but it is actually a story inside the front staffs, which made it more interesting. So, I made up my mind to go for a new challenge.

그동안 여러 장르의 드라마 작품에 참여해왔다. 크게 나누면 시대극(역사극), 현대극이지만 세부적으로는 드라마, 멜로, 액션, 코믹, 판타지 등 다양하게 접했다. 그런데 최근 전 작품이 ‘범죄, 서스펜스, 스릴러’장르 였다. 복합적인 장르의 경험으로 인해 육체적으로나, 정신적으로 쉼이 필요했다. 마음을 비우고 기운을 충전하기도 하며 새로운 작품에 대한 나름의 기대를 정리하며 지냈다. 올해를 어떻게 보람되게 보낼 수 있을까 고민하다가 만나게 된 작품이 <스토브리그>다. 장르가 스포츠 드라마인게 새롭고 좋았다. 훨씬 편한 마음이 들었다. 소재가 야구 세계를 다루지만, ‘프런트 이야기’라는 점이 흥미로웠다. 또다시 도전해보고 싶은 마음이 생겨서 결정했다.

2. Was there a deciding factor that made you choose this production?

이 제작진과 일하겠다고 결심한 이유가 있었나요?

The offer was quite simple. I felt everything was so explicit after reading the scripts. Then I met the producer and writer to have a good conversation. They seemed very certain and talented. And also calm and humble. I felt so comfortable since they seemed they understood what I was saying, which brought me a happy feeling with an expectation of ‘This would be a great series.’. I had confidence that I could work joyfully with all these people.

캐스팅 제안이 명료했다. 단숨에 대본을 읽고 명쾌한 기분이 들었다. 이후에 작가님과 감독님을 만났고 좋은 대화를 나눴다. 그들은 매우 분명했고 유능해 보였다. 그리고 차분하고 겸손했다. 내 말의 진의를 파악해주는 것 같아 편안했고, ‘참 좋은 드라마가 될 수 있겠구나’ 하는 기대가 행복했다. 이들과 함께라면 즐겁게 촬영할 수 있겠구나 하는 확신이 들었다.

3. Please share your impression of Nam Goong Min.

남궁민 씨에 대해선 어떤 첫 인상을 받으셨나요? 가까워진 후엔 어떤 분인가요?

Basically, he is soft and refined. He speaks carefully with restraint. Flexible as well as intelligent. He seems like a person who has a huge passion for acting and strong will for challenges.

기본적으로 나긋하고 정제된 사람 같다. 말을 조심스럽게 하고 표현이 절제되어 있다. 유연하면서도 지적인 느낌이다. 연기에 대한 열정이 크고 도전하려는 의지가 강한 사람인 것 같다.

4. It is your 2nd time working with Nam Goong Min, how do you feel? Is it very different from your previous work together?   

남궁민 씨와는 두 번째로 함께 하는 작품인데 어떠신가요? 첫 작품 때와는 다른 점이 있나요?

It was so good to see him after <Hur Jun, The Original Story(2013)>, MBC. I played Hur Jun’s wife Da-hee, who had modest and quiet character. Namgoong Min took a role of Yoo Ji-tae (Hur Jun’s teacher)’s son, Yoo Do-ji, so we actually had quiet a few scenes together. But as the drama was shot for a very long time (135 episodes), it felt like we all worked together for a long time as well. I chat with him much more than before, maybe the previous time we had made us feel more close to each other.

2013년 MBC <구암허준>에서 같은 작품을 한 후, 오랜만에 봐서 반가웠다. 내가 맡았던 허준의 아내 ‘다희’역할은 다소곳하고 정적인 인물이었다. 남궁민 오빠는 허준의 스승인 유지태의 아들 ‘유도지’역할이었고, 사실상 우린 자주 부딪히는 인물들이 전혀 아니었다. 함께 호흡 했다기엔 거의 만난 적이 없었던 것 같다. 그렇지만 드라마의 긴 회차(135부작) 덕분에 오래 촬영한 느낌이 남아있다. 그 때보다 지금 훨씬 더 이야기를 많이 나누는데, 아마 그 때의 만남이 친근감에 더 도움이 되는 것 같다.

5. How will you describe your character Lee Se Young and what would you say is the charm of Lee Se Young?

이세영이라는 인물은 어떤 인물인가요? 그리고 이세영이 가진 매력은 무엇일까요?

Lee Se-young is the only female head of the Korean professional baseball team and the youngest member of the operation team. She has a strong passion for work, a lot of love for baseball, and a lot of power and strength. Basically, she is competent, observant, and good at action. She has a flexible character but does not bend and tries to follow the correct direction. I like her because she can stand on his own feet without relying on somebody else. She’s basically equipped with kindness, but when she thinks it’s not the right way, she stands against confidently regardless of the person who she is facing. She may seem weak outwardly, but she has sufficient qualities as a leader and has inner power. She is the first to understand and help Seungsoo, but at the same time she can put the proper brakes on his actions without forgetting the belief that even Seungsoo can go wrong sometimes..

이세영은 국내 프로야구단 가운데 유일한 여성 운영팀장이자 최연소 운영팀장이다. 일에 대한 열정이 강하고, 야구에 대한 애정이 넘치고, 대단한 저력과 근성을 지닌 사람이다. 기본적으로 유능하고, 관찰력이 좋고, 행동력도 좋다. 유연하나 굽히진 않으며 옳은 방향을 향하려는 캐릭터다. 누구한테 꼭 의지하지 않고서도 홀로 설 수 있는 인물인 것 같아 좋다. 기본적으로 친절함을 장착하고 있으나, 아니라는 생각이 들 땐 절대 지지 않고 위아래 상관없이 당당해지는 모습이 멋있다. 겉보기엔 연약해 보일 수 있어도 리더로서의 자질이 충분하고 내면의 파워풀함을 지닌 인물이다. 승수를 가장 먼저 이해하고 힘을 보태지만, 그가 늘 옳은 것은 아니라는 주관을 잃지 않으며 승수의 행보에 적절한 제동을 걸 수 있는 사람이다.

6. How is Lee Se Young different from other roles you have played?

그동안 맡았던 배역들과 이세영 역은 얼마나 차이가 있나요?

I personally like people who are self-reliant. When you play such a character, you can feel free. In fact, this character ‘Se-Young’ does not require extreme effort to play. The reason is that I think that the confident image that can be thrown out of a free mind will be projected much better onto Se-Young and feels more natural. Rather than doing something completely new, familiar and slightly impromptu responses to the circumstances is what I pursue.

개인적으로 주체성이 있는 인물들을 좋아한다. 그런 캐릭터를 연기할 때 자유로움을 느낄 수 있기 때문이다. 사실 이번 캐릭터는 크게 힘들이지 않고 편하게 임하고 있다. 자유로운 마음 속에서 뿜어져 나올 수 있는 당찬 모습이 세영 캐릭터에 훨씬 잘 어울리고 자연스럽게 느껴질 것이라 생각하기 때문이다. 전작들과 다른 완벽한 새로움보단, 익숙하면서도 약간은 상황에 따른 대처가 다른 느낌을 추구하고 있다.

7. How similar or different are you to the character “Lee Se Young” ? 

이세영이라는 캐릭터와 박은빈씨 본인은 어느 정도 비슷한가요?

I believe that people have different kinds of nature inside. In my case, I am mostly calm and introverted, but outgoing and joyful sometimes. However, I tend to separate my own character from the characters I play, so the differences or similarities do not bother in acting.

사람은 저마다 다면성을 지니고 산다고 생각한다. 굳이 말하자면, 나는 차분하고 조용한 내면적 성향도 있고 명랑하고 밝은 외향적 성향도 있다. 그러나 실제 나의 성격과 캐릭터의 성격은 최대한 분리해서 생각하려는 편이므로 연기하는 데 큰 의미는 없다고 생각한다.

8. What are some challenges you face playing this role?

이 역할을 맡아서 어려운 점이 있다면 무엇이 있나요?

I didn’t do it on purpose, but sometimes at the filming site, I feel embarrassed when I listen to people saying ‘she’s too cute to be a head of the operation team.’. It is a relief that Se-Young is known to be the youngest operating team head in history, but sometimes I feel difficult because I feel like I am far from the real team heads in terms of the weight they have. I try to focus on myself with a balance, thinking ‘this sort of team head might exist!’.

일부러 귀여운 척을 한 건 절대 아닌데, 현장에서 ‘그래도 운영팀장인데 너무 귀여운 것 같다’는 얘기를 들을 때 몹시 곤란하다. 극중에서 ‘최연소 운영팀장’이란 타이틀이 위안이 되지만, 아무래도 실제 운영팀장들이 가지고 있을 무게감과는 내가 거리가 있다고 생각하기 때문에 때때로 어려움을 느낀다. ‘이런 사람도 있을 수 있지’하는 생각으로 중심을 잡고 균형을 유지하려고 노력하고 있다.

9. This drama talks about baseball, are you a fan of baseball? If yes, please share how much you love baseball.

이 드라마는 야구에 관한 드라마인데요, 실제로도 야구 팬이신가요? 얼마나 야구를 좋아하시나요?

If I were an actual baseball fan, I would be way easy for me to prepare for the drama. But to be honest, I had had known a little about baseball. Therefore I am trying hard to get close to baseball.

실제로도 내가 야구 팬이었다면 훨씬 이 작품을 준비하는데 편했을 것 같다. 그러나 사실 야구에 대해선 잘 몰랐다. 그래서 열심히 야구와 친해지려고 노력 중이다.

10. How did you prepare for this character?

이세영 배역을 맡기 위해 어떻게 준비를 하셨나요?

I went to the ballpark to watch the game directly. The fever from the ballpark and marvelous spirits of baseball fans let me know the charm of baseball. I studied to get familiar with baseball terminologies, and try hard to understand what real baseball fans think. I asked some questions to heads of baseball teams and PR staffs to see what they actually do.

야구장에 직접 경기관람을 하러 갔다. 그 안에서 느껴지는 열기와 야구 팬들의 아름다운 정신이 야구의 매력을 알게 해주었다. 대사를 할 때 익숙하지 않은 야구용어들을 익히기 위한 공부를 하고, 실제 야구 팬들의 마음을 알아보려는 작업을 했다. 현재 근무하고 있는 프로야구단 운영팀장님이나 홍보팀 직원들을 만나 뵙고 어떤 일을 하고 계시는지 궁금한 점들을 여쭤보기도 했다.

11. What’s the most memorable scene so far?

지금까지 기억나는 장면이 있다면 무엇인가요?

I remember some scenes that gave me lacking feeling, I cannot name a single one. I feel excited whenever Se-Young gets upset during the scene. Ah, the shooting in Hawaii was a very good memory, too.

스스로 아쉬웠던 장면들도 기억나고, 그 외 여러 장면들이 기억난다. 한 가지만 뽑을 순 없을 것 같은데, 극중 세영이 화를 낼 때마다 희열을 느낀다. 하와이 로케이션 촬영을 간 것도 좋았다.

12. Stove League refers to the off season for the sport, what do you do when you are “off season” from your drama filming?

‘스토브리그’는 스포츠의 비시즌을 의미하는데요, ‘연기의 비시즌’ 때 박은빈 씨는 어떻게 시간을 보내시나요?

I just try to stay calm, spend comfortable times. I like taking rests without planning something big. I spend long time at home. Reading comics. When I go out I love watching movies in cinemas from time to time, and go travelling with my mom. I eat well, rest well, emptying my mind.

그냥 편하게, 잘 지내려고 한다. 크게 무언가를 계획하지 않고 그저 쉬는 것이 제일 좋다. 집에서 보내는 시간이 많다. 가만히 집에서 좋아하는 만화를 본다 던지, 가끔 영화를 보러 집 밖을 나서고, 때론 엄마와 함께 여행을 떠난다. 잘 먹고, 잘 쉬면서 마음을 비우고 생각을 비우려는 과정을 거친다.

13. What would you like to say to your fans?

팬들에게 한 말씀 부탁드립니다.

I am so glad to see you again with <Hot Stove League>. This is a drama that people can watch easily without any sort of uneasy feelings. I hope you guys enjoy watching it, getting interested by the stories of the people that we haven’t had a chance to know. I will try to be an energizer for this drama. Enjoy your watch!
